How to Measure Your Foot at Home
4 steps for the most accurate shoe size.
Trace on paper
Place a blank sheet of paper on a hard floor (not carpet). Stand on it and trace around your foot with a pencil held vertically.
Measure heel to toe
Measure the longest distance from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe (not always the big toe).
Measure in the afternoon
Feet swell slightly throughout the day. Measure in the afternoon or evening for the most accurate fit β especially for athletic shoes.
Use the larger foot
Measure both feet β most people have one slightly larger than the other. Always size for the larger foot and use insoles on the smaller side if needed.
Brand Sizing Varies
Nike tends to run half a size large. Converse runs half a size small. New Balance and ASICS are typically true to size. When buying online, always read customer reviews for sizing notes specific to that model.
US men's and women's shoe sizes differ by 1.5 sizes. A women's US 9 equals a men's US 7.5 in terms of foot length. This matters when shopping unisex or gender-neutral shoes.
Example conversions: W8 = M6.5 Β· W9 = M7.5 Β· W10 = M8.5 Β· W11 = M9.5. If you're a woman buying men's shoes, go 1.5 sizes down. If a man buying women's, go 1.5 up.
A half shoe size represents approximately 4mm (about 1/6 inch) in additional foot length. If you measure between two whole sizes, always round up to the next half or full size β never down.
Width also matters. US shoes come in widths: Narrow (2A/N), Medium (B for women, D for men), Wide (D for women, 2E for men), and Extra Wide (2E/EE for women, 4E for men).
Shoe Size Conversion β Complete Guide
Shoe sizing is one of the most confusing aspects of buying footwear β especially when shopping internationally. The US, UK, EU, and Asian sizing systems are all different, and even within a single system, brands can vary significantly. This guide explains how each system works, how conversions are calculated, and how to find your most accurate size from a foot measurement.
Our free shoe size converter handles men's, women's, and kids' sizes across all four major systems: US, UK, EU, and CM (foot length in centimeters). Enter your size in any system and instantly see the equivalent in all others.
How Shoe Size Systems Work
US Shoe Sizing
The US sizing system uses separate scales for men, women, and children. Men's and women's sizes use the same numbers but represent different foot lengths β a men's US 8 is about 26cm while a women's US 8 is about 24.5cm. Children's sizes run from 0 (newborn) to 13, then restart at 1Y (youth) through 7Y before transitioning into adult sizing.
UK Shoe Sizing
UK sizing is similar to US but offset by different amounts for men and women. Men's UK sizes are 0.5 less than US (US 10 = UK 9.5). Women's UK sizes are 2 less than US (US 8 = UK 6). UK kids' sizes closely mirror US kids' sizes up to size 13, after which they adopt adult sizing conventions.
EU Shoe Sizing
European sizing uses a single continuous scale with no separate men's and women's numbers. EU sizes are based on the Paris Point system, where each size equals 2/3 of a centimeter of foot length. To convert US men's to EU, add approximately 33. For US women's to EU, add approximately 31. EU sizing is used across Continental Europe and is generally the most precise system for cross-country shopping.
CM Sizing (Japan / Korea)
Japan and South Korea use foot length in centimeters as the primary sizing unit. This is the most universal and accurate system β it doesn't require separate men's/women's scales because foot length is foot length. A 26.5cm foot is a 26.5cm foot regardless of gender. When buying from Japanese brands like Asics, Onitsuka Tiger, or Korean brands, CM sizing is your most reliable reference.
Tips for Buying Shoes Online
Always Use Foot Length, Not Just Size
The most accurate way to buy shoes online is to know your foot length in centimeters and compare it to the brand's size chart directly. Size charts that show CM or mm ranges eliminate the ambiguity of regional sizing differences entirely.
Check Brand-Specific Fit Notes
Nike shoes generally run half a size large β many shoppers size down. Converse (especially Chuck Taylors) run half a size small β size up. New Balance, ASICS, and Brooks tend to be true to size. Adidas varies by model β the Ultraboost runs slightly large while the Stan Smith is typically true to size.
Consider Shoe Width
Length is only half the equation. If shoes feel tight across the ball of the foot even in the right length, you may need a wider width. US widths range from 2A (narrow) through 4E (extra wide). Many brands offer standard width only β look for brands like New Balance, Brooks, or Keen if width is a concern.
Athletic Shoes vs Dress Shoes
Athletic shoes (running, basketball, training) should have a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe to accommodate foot swelling during activity. Dress and leather shoes are typically worn with less room and may feel snug at first but stretch slightly with wear.
