Frequently Asked Questions
Tax amount = Pre-tax Price × Tax Rate. Total = Pre-tax Price × (1 + Tax Rate). Example: $85 item at 7.5% → Tax = $85 × 0.075 = $6.38 → Total = $91.38. To reverse (find pre-tax from a total): Pre-tax = Total / (1 + Rate). Example: $91.38 total at 7.5% → Pre-tax = $91.38 / 1.075 = $85.00.
Five US states have no statewide sales tax: Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Alaska. Alaska is unique — while there's no state sales tax, local municipalities can impose their own. For large purchases like cars or electronics, buying in a no-tax state can save hundreds to thousands of dollars. Many people near state borders shop across state lines specifically to avoid sales tax.
Sales tax (US): charged only at the final sale, NOT included in listed price — you see the true cost only at checkout. VAT/GST (Europe, Canada, Australia): charged at each production stage but included in the listed price. The consumer sees the total cost upfront. A $50 item in Europe already includes VAT; a $50 item in the US will cost more at checkout. Both result in similar tax burden but differ in transparency.
When combining state and local sales taxes, some jurisdictions exceed 11-12%. Louisiana has one of the highest combined rates (~9.55%), followed by Tennessee (~9.55%) and Arkansas (~9.46%). California has the highest state base rate (7.25%), which some cities push above 10%. The lowest combined rates are in states like Alaska, Hawaii, Wyoming, Wisconsin, and Maine (2-4%).
It varies by state. Most states exempt unprepared grocery food from sales tax, including California, New York, Texas, and Florida. Some states tax groceries at a reduced rate (Illinois: 1%, Missouri: 1.225%). A few states fully tax groceries at the standard rate (Mississippi, South Dakota). Prepared food (restaurant meals, hot deli items) is almost always taxable everywhere.
