About the Day Counter
A day counter helps you track important dates — whether counting down to an exciting event, tracking a habit streak, or finding a date X days from today. Day counting is used in project management, habit tracking, pregnancy calendars, legal deadlines, and personal milestones.
How Day Counting Works
Days between two dates:
diff = (endDate − startDate) / 86400000 [milliseconds in a day]
Add N days to a date:
result = startDate + N × 86400000
Leap year rule:
Leap year = divisible by 4, except centuries (÷100)
unless also divisible by 400

366 vs 365 days per year — affects longer countdowns
Is today included in the day count?
It depends on the convention. This calculator counts exclusive of the start date and inclusive of the end date — the same convention used in most scheduling and legal contexts. For example, from Monday to Wednesday = 2 days (Tue and Wed). If you need inclusive counting (Monday through Wednesday = 3 days), add 1 to the result. Legal deadlines often count differently — always check your specific jurisdiction's rules.
How do leap years affect day counting?
Leap years add an extra day (Feb 29) to the calendar, making them 366 days instead of 365. If your date range spans a leap year February, your count will be 1 day longer than if it didn't. For example: Jan 1, 2024 to Jan 1, 2025 = 366 days (2024 was a leap year). Jan 1, 2023 to Jan 1, 2024 = 365 days. Leap years occur in 2024, 2028, 2032, etc.
How do you calculate business days only?
Business days exclude weekends (Saturday and Sunday). To count business days: count total days, subtract weekends. A simple approximation: business days ≈ total days × 5/7. For exact calculation, iterate through each day and skip Saturdays and Sundays. This calculator shows both calendar days and an estimated business day count. Note: it doesn't account for public holidays, which vary by country.
