How the US Army Body Fat Test Works

The US Army Body Fat Calculator uses the official circumference-based method from Army Regulation 600-9 (AR 600-9). Unlike scale-based methods, it measures specific body circumferences to estimate body fat percentage without expensive equipment. Every soldier must meet the standards at each APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test).

The Official Formulas (AR 600-9)

Male: %BF = 86.010 × log10(Waist − Neck) − 70.041 × log10(Height) + 36.76 Female: %BF = 163.205 × log10(Waist + Hip − Neck) − 97.684 × log10(Height) − 78.387 All measurements in inches. Heights and circumferences rounded to nearest 0.5".

How to Take Accurate Measurements

📏
Neck Measurement
Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple). Keep tape horizontal. Do not compress skin. Round down to nearest 0.5".
⚖️
Waist Measurement
Males: measure at navel level. Females: measure at narrowest point. Take at end of normal exhale. Round up to nearest 0.5".
🏃
Hip Measurement (Female)
Measure at largest circumference around the buttocks, parallel to the floor. Round up to nearest 0.5".
🔄
Take 3 Measurements
The Army requires taking each measurement 3 times. Use the average. Measurements must be taken by a trained unit fitness trainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)?
Soldiers who exceed body fat standards are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). They are given a timeline to reduce their body fat to within standards. During ABCP enrollment, a soldier may be restricted from promotion, reenlistment, and attendance at professional military education. Continued failure after the program can result in separation.
Is the Army tape test accurate?
The circumference method has a margin of error of approximately 3–4% compared to DEXA scans (the gold standard). It tends to overestimate body fat in very muscular individuals and can be affected by measurement technique. However, it is the official DoD standard and has been used for decades as a practical field assessment.
Can I pass the Army weight standards but fail the body fat test?
Yes. The Army uses a two-tier screening system. First, soldiers are screened with the height/weight table from AR 600-9. If you exceed the weight for your height, you proceed to the tape test. Soldiers can be underweight on the table but still fail if measurements exceed standards.
How do I reduce body fat quickly for the Army test?
Focus on a caloric deficit through diet (most impactful), combined with cardio to reduce waist circumference specifically. Strength training maintains muscle. The Army ABCP typically provides 90 days for improvement. Reducing alcohol, refined carbohydrates, and added sugars while increasing protein and fiber tends to produce the fastest measurable results in waist circumference.
