About This Basic Calculator

This free online basic calculator handles all standard arithmetic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — with a clean interface designed for speed and accuracy. Unlike a simple phone calculator, this one stores your full calculation history, supports keyboard input, and lets you copy results with one click. It's ideal for everyday calculations: splitting bills, checking totals, quick conversions, and mental math verification.

For more complex calculations, use our Scientific Calculator (trigonometry, logarithms, exponents) or our Percentage Calculator for percentage-based problems.

Keyboard Shortcuts

You don't need to use the mouse at all — this calculator supports full keyboard input for faster calculations:

How the History Tape Works

Every time you press =, the calculation expression and result are automatically saved to the History panel on the right. The history panel also shows live stats — count of calculations, sum of all results, and average. Click any history entry to load that result back into the calculator. This is useful for multi-step calculations where you need to reference a previous answer. The history also shows color-coded results: green for positive results and red for negative results. The history persists for the current browser session.

Order of Operations Note

This basic calculator processes calculations left to right, one operation at a time — similar to a physical desktop calculator. It does not follow algebraic order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS) for chained inputs. For example, entering 2 + 3 × 4 will calculate as (2+3)×4 = 20, not 14. For algebraically correct order of operations, use our Scientific Calculator which supports full expression parsing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this online calculator

Yes — completely free, forever. No account required, no sign-up, no usage limits. PrimeCalculator.net provides free calculator tools across Finance, Health, Math, and Other categories — all free.
Yes — full keyboard support is built in. Press 0–9 for digits, + - * / for operations, Enter or = to calculate, Backspace to delete, and Escape to clear. This makes it much faster than clicking buttons for long calculations. No need to click in the calculator first — just start typing.
The % button converts the current displayed number to its percentage equivalent (divides by 100). For example: type 25 then press % → displays 0.25. Use it in context: 200 × 15 % = 30 (15% of 200). For more advanced percentage calculations like "what percentage is X of Y" or "percentage change", use our dedicated Percentage Calculator.
The history is stored in your browser session only — it will be lost when you close or refresh the page. To save results, use the Copy button on the display to copy individual results to your clipboard, then paste into a spreadsheet or document. For ongoing financial calculations and records, our Finance Calculator and Loan Calculator provide more structured outputs.
A basic calculator handles the four arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — plus percentage and square root. A scientific calculator adds trigonometric functions (sin, cos, tan), logarithms (log, ln), exponents, factorials, Pi, and algebraic expression parsing with correct order of operations. For school, engineering, or science problems, use our Scientific Calculator. For everyday arithmetic — this basic calculator is faster and simpler.
Enter the number, then press the √ button (below the main keypad). For example: type 144 then press → result is 12. For cube roots, nth roots, or more complex operations, use our Scientific Calculator. Note: square root of a negative number will show an error — square roots of negatives are imaginary numbers not supported in a basic calculator.
Yes — this calculator is fully responsive and touch-optimised. The buttons are sized for comfortable tapping on both phone and tablet screens, and the display auto-scales large numbers to fit. It works on all modern browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge across iOS and Android. No app install required — just open the page and start calculating.
The +/− button (also called the sign toggle) flips the current number between positive and negative. For example: enter 50 then press +/− → displays −50. Press it again to go back to 50. This is useful when you need to subtract using addition (e.g. add a negative amount to a running total) or when entering a negative starting value.
