About This Basic Calculator
This free online basic calculator handles all standard arithmetic operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — with a clean interface designed for speed and accuracy. Unlike a simple phone calculator, this one stores your full calculation history, supports keyboard input, and lets you copy results with one click. It's ideal for everyday calculations: splitting bills, checking totals, quick conversions, and mental math verification.
For more complex calculations, use our Scientific Calculator (trigonometry, logarithms, exponents) or our Percentage Calculator for percentage-based problems.
Keyboard Shortcuts
You don't need to use the mouse at all — this calculator supports full keyboard input for faster calculations:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| 0 – 9 | Enter digits |
| + − * / | Arithmetic operators |
| Enter or = | Calculate result |
| Backspace | Delete last digit |
| Escape | Clear / AC |
| . (period) | Decimal point |
| % (Shift+5) | Percentage of current number |

How the History Tape Works
Every time you press =, the calculation expression and result are automatically saved to the History panel on the right. The history panel also shows live stats — count of calculations, sum of all results, and average. Click any history entry to load that result back into the calculator. This is useful for multi-step calculations where you need to reference a previous answer. The history also shows color-coded results: green for positive results and red for negative results. The history persists for the current browser session.
Order of Operations Note
This basic calculator processes calculations left to right, one operation at a time — similar to a physical desktop calculator. It does not follow algebraic order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS) for chained inputs. For example, entering 2 + 3 × 4 will calculate as (2+3)×4 = 20, not 14. For algebraically correct order of operations, use our Scientific Calculator which supports full expression parsing.
